The Public Market (Former Convent of Saint Francisco) is located in Osuna’s Plaza Mayor. In the 19th century, it was moved to the cloisters belonging to the ancient Madre de Dios convent of Franciscan friars, founded in Osuna in 1531. In 1504, Inés Chirino, widow of the mayor, Luis Pernía, donated the Madre de Dios Church, part of the houses inhabited by the clergy of the Order of St Francis, so they could found convents. Subsequently, in 1551, it became one of the first major Educational Institutions of the province thanks to the existence of the Ancient University of Osuna and falling under the protection of the Dukes of Osuna. Finally, after the building collapsed in 1943, the main altarpiece was acquired by the Franciscan monks of San Buenaventura in Seville in around 1945. Today, it is the site of the Mercado de Abastos (wholesale market), with only the cloisters remaining, which is where the different stalls are situated. Osuna’s Caldenegros Archaeological Park occupies a large area of almost ten thousand square metres. The unique location of this area, at the foot of the monumental acropolis, and its proximity make it the ideal setting to promote the entire site. The archaeological data provided by the area gives us much more comprehensive information about all of Osuna’s historic quarter. The archaeological research of the area provided extremely interesting information about Medieval and Modern Osuna, highlighting a significant section of the defensive system and the urban structures associated with it, defining in them outlying areas outside of the walls of los Negros. This process has been key to discovering more about the area. Until now, there were very few or no text references. All of this enables what has, until now, been the unknown medieval past of Osuna to be documented. It is a small lake of brackish and storm waters, situated in the municipality of Lucena, on Oligocene land, within a large area of rainfed crops, mainly olives, cereals and vines. It is practically circular in shape, completely lacking in riparian vegetation, although its underwater vegetation is very important. With a surface area of 5.46 hectares of Nature Reserve and 116 of protected area, it has a maximum depth of 0.4m. In winter, it is home to a large number of ducks and waders. Access to this trail starts from a fork to the left on the CO-751 road next to a small sign to signpost Povedano bridge. From this point, we enter a country lane which descends with bends and can be done on foot, bike or by vehicle (500m from the start of this earth track, there is a farmhouse with a flat area of land where you can leave your vehicle). A few metres further on, we find a small waterwheel, and then, on our right there is a farmhouse. The entire trail takes us through an area of olive groves with gentle hills that rise and fall, and beautiful views of the Sierra de Aras mountain range. We will continue to head right, always along an earth track, and following the course of the Anzur river until we reach Povedano bridge. If we want to, we can climb the same path a little further and take in the views of this 16th century bridge until reaching the Sordillo well. Ruta Encina Milenaria (Thousand-year-old Holm Oak Trail)

The thousand-year-old holm oak is situated in the village of Llanos de Don Juan in the municipality of Rute and has been declared a Natural Monument by the Department of the Environment. It is a unique tree in the province of Cordoba, belonging to the quercus ilex (holm oak) species, with an estimated age of around four hundred and fifty years. This centenary tree is located near to Lucena and the route is accessed via the camino de los Poleares to the windmill of the same name and then continuing by forking to the left until we reach the holm oak. Ruta Encina Milenaria (Thousand-year-old Holm Oak Trail)

This short trail is located in a natural reserve and consists of a walk around the Amarga lake (258 ha) and Dulce lake (262.52 ha). The main feature of Amarga lake is the large quantity of magnesium sulphate in its water, hence its name (literally ‘bitter lake’). We will be surprised by the contrasting colours of this lake, with its deep blue, and the laguna Dulce which, despite its proximity, has much warmer tones; the water comes from underground, although the lakes are also fed by run-off water and rain. The lakes offer landscapes where you can enjoy marsh vegetation with characteristic formations such as: reed, tamarisk, bulrush and fescue. The surroundings offer a beautiful panorama of olive groves and Mediterranean scrub. The most notable fauna are birds since it is their habit, and a transit area along the migration route for others. Of particular relevance are the Western swamphen and ruddy ducks, both classified as being ‘in danger of extinction’. In terms of the olive grove, you can find everything from century-old olive trees with 3 trunks to 3-year-old trees. The dominant varieties are the hojiblanca belonging to the Lucena olive oil PDO. The marteña or picual varieties dominate 3 of the plots of olive trees. The vineyard sits in 3 plots with a trellis system; mostly of the Pedro Ximenez variety which falls within the Montill-Moriles PDO. However, it is a restored landscape, which formed part of the complex of lakes and wetlands that are currently named endorheic complex of La Lantejuela. Situated in the southern part of the municipal area of Ecija, it has been used for agriculture for the last forty years. Once the area was drained, by channelling the streams, a drainage network was installed to prevent the natural accumulation of water on the farm, as had happened for thousands of years with the land in its natural state. Before it was dried out, this lake was the largest of those that made up the endorheic complex. The escarpment gives us a scenic value of high visual quality. The vegetation has been almost completely replaced by agricultural land. There are small pockets of scrubland-grassland remaining. It is a SW-NE facing tabular relief with an altitude of between 100 and 220 metres. The substrate is made up of loamy sands, sandstones, calcarenites, blue loams, etc… which develop medium quality soil for farming use with limitations. The most common fauna to be seen here are species such as buzzards, kestrels, booted eagles, blue tits or snakes, among others. How to get there: Opposite the Alcázar de la Puerta de Sevilla (Fortress of the Port of Seville), take the ‘camino del matadero’ path up to the old station where it splits from the Vía Verde de los Alcores trail which leads to the escarpment.

This route has two unique characteristics: the first, that being a linear route, it can be started from various points, coinciding with various rural lodgings located in Ribera Alta, Ribera Baja and Ermita Nueva; and the second, that as it runs along the length of the Velillos River, you will enjoy a contrasting microclimate with very mild temperatures in summer and icy temperatures in winter. Nightingales, common blackbirds and warblers nest in this wonderful meadow of poplars and brambles. Here we can also find shrews, one of the smallest mammals in existence. One of the town’s protected areas of greatest wealth shines in its own light, the Endorheic Area. Each year, its beautiful and shallow lakes are visited by species of birds that rest in Osuna on their migratory route. The lakes of Ballestera and Calderón Chica form the Nature Reserve of the Lantejuela Endorheic Complex, located in the north west of the municipality of Osuna. The area occupied by the Nature Reserve falls within the boundary between the Baetic Depression and the Sub-baetic units, where there was once a large endorheic area which spread across the Osuna and Ecija countryside. Lake Calderón Chica The high salinity which characterises its waters is one of the most striking values of the endorheic complex since it causes the colonisation of highly specialised species, of very restricted distribution, such as the aquatic macrophyte, Althenia Orientalis. The Sierra de Albayate is a dense Mediterranean forest containing notable species such as holm oak (Quercus ilex), Portuguese oak (Quercus faginea), broom (Genista cinérea), small-flowered gorse (Ulex parviflorus), rockrose (Cistus albidus), Mediterranean honeysuckle (Lonicera implexa), wild olive tree (Olea europaea var. sylvestris), matagallo (Phlomis purpurea), English ivy (Hedera helix), smilax (Smilax aspera), broom (Retama sphaerocarpa), hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) and blackthorn (Prunus spinosa). Complejo Endorréico (Endorheic Area) Nature Reserve in Utrera

Like the other wetlands located in the strip between the Baetic mountain ranges and the depression of the Guadalquivir, this complex is a wetland formed by three shallow lakes: Zarracatín, Arjona and Alcaparrosa. Their marked seasonal character means they depend on direct rainfall so they are usually dry in summer or during periods of continued drought. Originally, the wetland landscape was full of holm oaks (carrascas) along with wild olive trees, carob trees and gall oaks. Indeed, the historic succession of different civilisations has led to practically all of the natural vegetation of this land disappearing so the land can be used for intensive farming. Hence the lakes are fully surrounded by crops. Only remnants of natural vegetation remain near to the lake, notably tamarisk, rushes, bulrushes and reeds. Thanks to their location, these lakes are of a high environmental value for birdlife, being a key location for sustenance, reproduction and rest during the migrations of numerous aquatic birds. There is an abundance of anatidae and rallidae, especially the common coot, with the occasional presence of ruddy ducks, flamingos and Western swamphens.

Pinar de Doña is a forest area of 15ha, situated to the west of Utrera town centre, next to the Don Ismael cork tree plantation. The dominant species is the stone pine, either forming dense masses or a clearing interspersed with meadows. The pine forest, which is home to some large trees, also contains wild olive trees, fan palms, myrtle, gorse and rockrose, and other Mediterranean scrubland species. In this area, there is also a significant presence of birds, mainly passeriformes and birds of prey. In terms of mammals, there are an abundance of rabbits and hares. Like the Don Ismael cork tree plantation, which it is attached to, the Doña pine forest is an island forest inside an environment which has been transformed due to its agricultural use, playing a key role from an ecological and landscape perspective. The location of the aparthotel, at Doña Catalina de Perea nº6, is an attraction for everyone who wants to discover Utrera. It is a historic street, just a few metres from the town’s Castle, in the heart of the historic quarter. Just a few steps away, you can enjoy Santiago church, Santa Maria church and Plaza del Altozano. Jesús Richarte joined Seville School of Art in 2013, obtaining a degree in Applied Arts in Sculpture. He subsequently obtained knowledge in wood carving, polychromy and clay modelling from various workshops. In 2015, he set up his own workshop in Ecija where he began working on important imagery projects for Holy Week in different cities around Spain.
