During the Roman period, it participated in the wars between Caesar and Pompey, and in the Al-Andalus period it was called Osona, a time when important poets, scientists, grammarians, and jurists were born.
The Christian conquest was carried out by Ferdinand III in 1240 and later it was given to the Order of Calatrava, with Pedro Girón as Master of the Order and in 1464 the town was exchanged and thus became the nucleus of the County of Ureña.
In 1531, Juan Téllez-Girón and María de la Cueva inherited the title of 4th Counts of Ureña. Their desire to rise in the nobility led the Téllez-Girón family to undertake a comprehensive building program that would completely reshape the landscape of Osuna. During this period, the Collegiate Church, the University, 19 monasteries, and 4 hospitals were founded. Later, in 1562, their son was granted the title of 1st Duke of Osuna.
It currently has around 18.000 inhabitants.
