LENT has a huge tradition in Baena, featuring its MISERERES and other events such as the celebration of the VÍSPERA DE SAN JOSÉ (ST JOSEPH’S EVE), on March 19th and 19th, when the town becomes a lively hotbed of drums, parading around the “candelorios” or bonfires.
The FIESTAS DE LA VIRGEN DEL CARMEN (FESTIVAL OUR LADY OF CARMEN) are held in summer, on July 16th, and the streets of Almedina are carpeted with coloured sawdust, adorned with flower pots, flowers and Manila shawls, and the MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL in the month of August. The DÍA DE JESÚS NAZARENO (FEAST DAY OF BLACK NAZARENE) is also held on September 14th, the patron saint of Baena.
The FERIA DE LA TAPA COFRADE Y CATA DE VINO (BROTHERHOOD TAPAS FAIR AND WINE TASTING) precedes the FERIA REAL (ROYAL FAIR) in the first week of October. In November, the OLIVE GROVE AND OLIVE OIL WORKSHOPS offer multiple activities related to liquid gold.
